Euroscreen S.A.

Patent Portfolio

Since its inception, Euroscreen has filed a significant number of patent applications. Up to now the USPTO and EPO have issued to Euroscreen 64 patents to Euroscreen for gene-based and related technology inventions (see Figure). Our claims sections cover the sequences of innovative drug targets, the research tools associated with these targets, the screening methods using such targets as well as the antibodies which bind to these targets. Many patents describing these inventions are also granted or pending both in Canada and Japan.

These patents offer a significant source of future revenue through the licensing to companies developing drugs acting on these targets, as has been realized from the licensing of our CCR5 patents to Pfizer (2002), Boehringer Ingleheim (2007) and AstraZeneca (2008) for the development of drugs in the field of AIDS and Rheumatoid Arthritis, and for therapeutic antibodies with Medarex in 2006. Additionally, Euroscreen will continue its history of strengthening its IP positions through selective in licensing or patent assignments.

In addition to the above-mentioned patent rights, Euroscreen filed a new generation of patent applications related to New Chemical Entities (NCEs) developed in the frame of its Drug Discovery efforts. These patent applications relate in particular to our CCR5 Agonist compounds and their uses as therapeutics. Preliminary search reports sent by patent offices confirmed that these NCEs complied with the novelty requirement.

The largest value is starting to be harvested from our combined CCR5 patent portfolio which is negotiated on a non-exclusive basis with several companies for the use of these CCR5 receptor patents in the processes of deriving drugs, particularly for the treatment of AIDS.

Our current patent portfolio covers the following drug targets .

  • CCR5 is the major cofactor of HIV virus and a validated target for rheumatoid arthritis.

In addition to our own patents our CCR5 portfolio also encompasses the Human Genome Sciences CCR5 patents.

  • ChemR23 is the receptor for chemerin, involved in dendritic cell regulation.
  • FPRL2 is a chemotactic receptor activated by a new peptide.
  • GPR72 is a receptor activated by arachidonic acid and derivatives.
  • GPR7 and GPR8 are receptors for neuropeptides NPB and NPW with ongoing validation for metabolic diseases and pain.
  • GPR43 is a receptor for short chain fatty acids with ongoing validation for metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
  • ORL1 is the receptor of nociceptin, involved in pain.
  • P2Y4 is a receptor for UDP important for chloride transport in intestine.
  • P2Y11 is a receptor for ATP with ongoing validation for inflammatory diseases.
  • P2Y13 is a ADP receptor with ongoing validation for metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
  • SHIP2 Is a phosphatase involved in insulin signaling pathway.
